LAGOS – The National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Friday won two convictions at the Federal High Court in Lagos against two drug traffickers.
The court sentenced Stanley Mordi and John Samuel to two years imprisonment each for drug trafficking.
The convicts were earlier arraigned on April 29 and had pleaded guilty to the charge.
The judge, Justice Saliu Saidu, had adjourned the case for a review of facts and sentencing of the convicts.
At the resumed hearing, Saidu sentenced them to two years imprisonment each, saying the sentence should take effect from the date of conviction.
“The accused are found guilty as charged and accordingly convicted.
“They are sentenced to two years imprisonment each, which term shall start running from the date of conviction,’’ he said.
The judge also ordered that the drug tendered as exhibits should be kept in the custody of NDLEA.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Kalu Oriji, had told the court that the convicts were arrested by officers of the NDLEA on March 21, 2013 at Idimu, Lagos.
He said that about 69 kg of the narcotic was recovered from them, while unlawfully trading the illicit drugs.
According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes the provisions of Section 11 (c) of NDLEA Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation, 2004.
NAN reports that shortly before passing sentence, the convicts had pleaded with the court for leniency on the ground that they were first time offenders.
They prayed the court to be liberal with the sentence on them, adding that they had no past criminal records. (NAN)
