ABUJA – The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday in Abuja began a review of the 2009-2013 National Action Plan (NAP) for the promotion and protection of human rights in Nigeria.
Prof. Bem Angwe, the commission’s Executive Secretary, while speaking at the occasion charged stakeholders to evolve a document that would be a referral template for the protection of rights.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NAP is the country’s national policy document on human rights, as adopted by the Federal Government in 2006.
Angwe said the review of the document was necessary as the first one covering the period of 2009-2013 had expired.
“In order to continue on the foundation already laid, it is imperative to call stakeholders to assess the level of implementation of the last document.
“We will also identify successes and challenges, and develop new strategies that will further enhance the protection of rights in Nigeria,’’ he said.
“This meeting is hereby convened as a first step towards the initiation of the preparation of the next NAP document that will cover the period of 2015-2016.’’
Angwe said it was important to examine the challenges and successes made during the period under review by hearing from the Desk Officers of various establishments.
NAN reports that the policy document also focuses on the rights to sustainable development, peace and ensuring a protected environment.

It is the country’s response to the recommendations of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action adopted at the World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna, Austria in 1993.
The declaration requests that each state considers the desirability of drawing up a national action plan identifying steps where the states would improve the protection and promotion of human rights.(NAN)
