ABUJA – Dr Ado Mohammed, the Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), said there have been no reported case of polio virus in the last four years in the Southern states.
Mohammed disclosed this while fielding questions from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.
However, he confirmed that 18 cases of the Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) were reported in the 15 wards of the Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa.
“The information is totally false; Bayelsa and other states in the southern country have not reported a single case of Wild Polio Virus (WPV) in the last four years.[eap_ad_2]
“The Bayelsa Commissioner for Health will address the issue as soon as possible,’’ the executive director said.
NAN recalls that Mohammed had earlier this month said Nigeria had done very well in the fight against polio “because of all the endemic countries, Nigeria has the best performance in 2014’’.
He said the country recorded only six cases of wild polio virus as at the end of August, adding that five of the six cases were recorded in Kano.
“This year, Kano is the only state that is transmitting WPV; of the six cases, five are from Kano and that is why we need to fix Kano.
“What it means is that we mobilise more resources, both human and programme resources, because our time line is that we want to stop polio transmission by the end of 2014,’’ he said. (NAN)[eap_ad_3]
