The Nigerian Press Council (NPC), and the UNDP Democratic Governance for Development (DGD) project is partnering the National University Commission (NUC) to review the curriculum of journalism education in Nigeria.
The council made this known in a statement signed on Friday in Abuja by Mr Bayo Atoyebi, the Executive Secretary of NPC.
The statement said the objective was to build the capacity of the prospective journalism students to develop critical perspective in advocacy and agenda setting role of the media.
“ It is also to galvanise development and values of democratic institutions,’’ it stated.
The statement noted that it would develop the capacity of the print media in reporting with a knowledge base of the various arms of governance.
It would also promote the values of transparency, accountability and political integrity.
The statement said a group discussion on the inclusion of democratic governance issues in the model curriculum guidelines for improved journalism education in Nigeria would hold on October 30 in Abuja.
