The Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, is dead. He died on Tuesday, July 28, at the age of 85.
The circumstance surrounding his death is not clear but reports reaching Sundiata Post indicate that the news of the passing revered traditional ruler has thrown Osun State, especially his town, Ife, into confusion and mourning.
Osun State governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, is said to have been informed about the development.
Oba Sijuade became the 50th monarch or Ooni of Ife on December 6, 1980, taking the title Olubuse II.
He was one of the most respected monarch in Nigeria. He, along with the late Emir if Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, we’re sanctioned by the military regime of then General Muhammadu Buhari for visiting the State of Israel at a time Nigeria was yet to restore diplomatic ties with the Jewish State.
