Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has donated ₦10 million to the College of Nursing at Tansian University, Oba.
During his visit, Obi emphasized that education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation are crucial for Nigeria’s progress. He stressed that nations develop by investing in human capital through quality education, urging Nigerian leaders to prioritize these sectors. According to him, education remains the most effective way to break the cycle of poverty.
Presenting the cheque, Obi commended Tansian University for its commitment to training healthcare professionals. He highlighted that strengthening the healthcare sector begins with equipping institutions to produce skilled professionals who can effectively serve society. Addressing the students, Obi encouraged them to remain focused, noting that a well-educated population forms the foundation of a stable and prosperous nation.
In his welcome address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Eugene Nwadialor expressed deep appreciation for Obi’s continuous support. He recalled Obi’s earlier donation of ₦100 million to the university and described him as a dedicated advocate for education.
“Your philanthropy has made a profound impact on our institution, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to thank you in person,” Nwadialor said. “Your generosity is not only meeting immediate needs but also investing in a brighter future for generations to come.”
Prof. Nwadialor also raised concerns about 38 nursing students who were left stranded following the death of Monsignor Johnbosco Akam, who had been sponsoring their education. He appealed to Obi for assistance to enable the affected students to complete their studies.
Additionally, the Vice-Chancellor invited Obi to serve as the Special Guest of Honour at the university’s convocation ceremony scheduled for March 29, 2025. He expressed confidence that Obi’s presence would inspire the students and enrich the event.
The gathering, attended by staff, students, and dignitaries, praised Obi’s dedication to education and national development. They acknowledged that his support has positively transformed the lives of many young Nigerians.
As the event concluded, the university community reaffirmed its gratitude to Obi, fondly known as Okwute Ndigbo, for his commitment to academic excellence and societal progress. They expressed optimism for continued collaboration to further strengthen the university’s growth and impact.
Obi was accompanied by his former commissioners: Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna, Prof. Patrick Obi, and Mr. Ndubisi Menakaya.
