Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD), a pro-democracy and environmental rights advocacy group headquartered in Abia State, vehemently condemns the untimely demise of Ms. Ocheze Ogbonna, allegedly resulting from an altercation with her Chinese employer, an expatriate. FENRAD extends its deepest condolences to all affected by Ms. Ogbonna’s passing, including her family and friends.
According to multiple sources, it is alleged that Ms. Ogbonna was tragically pushed off a building, leading to her immediate demise. This incident necessitates urgent and decisive action from both the Abia State Government and the Federal Government, given that Galaxy Steel Company, where the incident occurred, operates under federal laws. The Foundation stresses the importance of ensuring justice in this matter, as no individual should be above the law, regardless of nationality.
Regrettably, this is not the first time Inner Galaxy Steel Company has been embroiled in controversy. Previous reports of worker exploitation and abuse, including sexual harassment, have surfaced, yet investigations have yielded minimal results. FENRAD urges thorough scrutiny of the company’s operations to prevent further exploitation of citizens.
Governor Alex Otti must demonstrate proactive leadership by ensuring that justice is not only served but also perceived to be served. An independent investigation into Galaxy Steel Company’s practices, including reviewing past findings, if available, is imperative. Legal action should be pursued if Ms. Ogbonna’s death is found to be the result of foreign expatriate misconduct.
FENRAD emphasizes the need for accountability and transparency in dealing with such cases, urging Governor Otti to uphold the rule of law and protect citizens from exploitation by foreign entities. While Abia welcomes foreign investment, it must not come at the expense of citizen rights. Justice must prevail, and the cycle of exploitation must end.
