KOSUBOSU (Kwara) – Residents of Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara on Saturday pleaded with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to create more voting registration centres in the area.
A cross-section of voters, who queued for registration at the INEC local government headquarters in Kosubosu, said they had difficulty trooping to the council headquarters from their various communities.
Mr Lukman Adamu, a resident of Okuta town, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that it was difficult, stressful and risky for people to travel to Kosubosu because of the terrain. [eap_ad_1] “INEC should create additional registration centres, at least one in each district. Coming to the headquarters is difficult, stressful and risky.
“This is making many people to abandon their civic responsibility. One centre is too small for the whole of Baruten because of our mass land and population,’’ Adamu said.
He, however, lauded INEC officials for expediency in attending to people, saying that the exercise was recording a success.
Adamu also commended the large turn-out of residents and their peaceful conduct.
Meanwhile, the local government’s Electoral Officer, Mr Abdulganiyu Bello, has commended the large turn-out, describing it as encouraging.
“With reports from other local governments, it really shows that our people here are well informed. That, I think is responsible for why they trooped out en mass for the exercise,’’ Bello said.
On the call for more registration centres in the area, Bello said that it was only the INEC national headquarters that could take such decision. (NAN)
