PORT HARCOURT (Sundiata Post) – The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has announced the cancellation of elections in two more local government areas in Saturday’s rerun polls in Rivers state.
It mentioned irregularities such as violence, snatching of ballot box and non-compliance with electoral law as reasons for the cancellation.
The two affected council areas according to the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Elder Aneide Ikoiwak, are Etche and Asari-Toru.
In addition, INEC said it has begun the auditing of personnel and materials sent into the field for the rerun election.
A statement issued by the spokesperson of INEC in Rivers State, Tonia Nwobia, on Sunday, said apart from carrying out personnel and material auditing, the commission, would also meet with critical stakeholders before announcing a new date for the election in the suspended council areas.
The local government areas where election were cancelled are now eight.
