ABUJA – An Abuja Senior Magistrates’ Court, life Camp, on Wednesday sentenced a sales representative, Friday Amah, to 500 days in prison for absconding with goods worth N1.4 million.
Amah, 25, of Dape Village, Abuja, was however, given an option to pay N30,000 fine by the Senior Magistrate, Mr Zubairu Mohammed.
The convict was jailed after pleading guilty to the two-count charge of criminal misappropriation and criminal breach of trust.
“You are hereby sentenced to 500 days in prison or pay N30,000 fine.
“You are also to pay a compensation of N1.4 million to the complainant being the value of goods given to you,’’ the Senior Magistrate ordered.
According to him, if the convict chooses to pay the fine, he should produce a reasonable person who must reside within the jurisdiction of the court. [eap_ad_1] “ The surety should also have evidence of good means of livelihood to guarantee the payment of the compensation between now and Dec. 31.
“And if the convict decides to go to jail, the compensation should be paid from now till 90 days after his jail term, which could be paid in installments.
He said failure to pay the compensation, “the convict shall serve another jail term of five months until full payment was made”.
Earlier, the Police prosecutor, Insp. Philip Apollos, told the court that Mr Olatayo Shotikase of No. 2 Adenekan street, Igbobi Fadayi, Lagos State, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station, on Aug.12.
Apollos said the complainant had on May 5, entrusted a Rickshaw (Keke Napep) spare parts worth N1.4 million to the accused.
He said Shotikase had on return from a journey demanded for the goods, which he kept in the custody of the accused.
He said the accused breached the agreement and could not give a satisfactory account of the goods nor the money.
Apollos said Amah had during police investigation confessed that he sold the spare parts and converted the money to his personal use. (NAN)
