Nigerian musician Seun Kuti has expressed his outrage in response to a horrifying incident in Cross Rivers State.
A group of youths reportedly set a woman, Madam Martina Okey Itagbor, on fire, accusing her of practicing witchcraft.
The incident was brought to light by journalist and activist Agba Jalingo, who shared the story on his Facebook page.
According to Jalingo, Itagbor, a member of the Catholic Women’s Organization (CWO), was targeted by 14 youths led by Christopher Sunday Mbey.
The accusation against Itagbor stemmed from another member of the CWO, who blamed her for the death of her two sons in a tragic accident.
The brutal act of murder took place in front of the village Catholic church while a CWO meeting was taking place inside.
Itagbor’s daughter, who is also a member of the organization, was present in the church but was unable to help her mother as she burned.
The state police spokesperson, Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident and assured that an investigation into the matter is underway.
Seun Kuti took to Instagram to condemn the heinous act and questioned whether being a witch is a crime under the Nigerian constitution.
He also expressed his hope that those responsible for Itagbor’s death would face a similar fate in the future.
In addition, he called on those who engage in acts of lynching to demonstrate the same level of outrage when religious leaders commit crimes such as child rape.
