Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu has approved the implementation of a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for civil servants, effective Monday, January 27, 2025.
This increase will be reflected in the January salaries of both state and local government employees.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Abubakar Bawa, confirmed in a statement that the decision aligns with the federal government’s policy and fulfills a promise made by Governor Aliyu to prioritize workers’ welfare.
Governor Aliyu expressed his expectation that civil servants will reciprocate this gesture by demonstrating greater commitment to their responsibilities. “With the commencement of the payment of this new national minimum wage, we expect a renewed commitment, hard work, punctuality, and, above all, seriousness from our civil servants,” he said.
In addition to the new minimum wage, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to timely salary payments, ensuring disbursements occur between the 19th and 22nd of each month. He also highlighted the consistent payment of salaries under his administration, contrasting it with the previous government’s delays, which left workers waiting up to 50 days.
Efforts are also underway to settle outstanding gratuities owed to retirees. The state government has allocated ₦500 million monthly to clear the backlog of unpaid gratuities and an additional ₦300 million for retirees from 2023 onwards.
Governor Aliyu assured that by the end of his administration, no civil servant in Sokoto State would have unpaid gratuities. This initiative underscores his commitment to the welfare of workers and retirees alike.
