Sokoto – A member of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Alhaji Sani Yakubu, has introduced a bursary scheme for secondary school girls in his constituency.
Yakubu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Sokoto that the gesture was to boost girl-child education in the area, which currently was very dismal.
The lawmaker said under the scheme, the girls would be provided with uniforms and exercise books each school term, as well as a N2,000 monthly allowance.
“The figure of girls from the area who were enrolled in schools and completed same is too disturbing,” he said.
According to him, from 2011/2012 to 2014/2015 academic sessions only 55 girls from the constituency gained admission into four secondary schools, out of which less than 20 of them completed their studies.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
Yakubu attributed the problem to poverty and absence of any girl secondary school in Gudu Local Government Area he represents.
He added that even their closest neighbour, Tangaza Local Government, has no girls secondary school.
“Poverty coupled with the dearth of a girls’ secondary school in my constituency is seriously affecting the education of the girl-child.
“I am therefore making a passionate appeal to the state government to urgently reverse the ugly trend by establishing a girls’ secondary school in the area.
“Other development partners, Non-Governmental Organizations and well-meaning individuals should also assist in redressing the obnoxious trend.
“The girl-child must be educated to any level of her desire without any inhibition, so as to enable her make meaningful contributions to national development,” Yakubu stressed. (NAN)
