ABUJA (SUNDIATA POST)- The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV), has described the new measures taken by President Bola Tinubu to push down rising food prices as “radical and proactive”.
Its Chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and Secretary, Sunday Gyungoun, in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, expressed optimism that the measures would “soon bear fruits”.
“The measures will stem the tide of inflation and help to drive down the prices of food in the country,” it said.
It lauded the bold initiative to temporarily lift import duties on certain food items, saying it was the right step in the right direction.
“We have reviewed all the proactive measures that include suspension of duties, tariffs and taxes on the importation of wheat, maize, cowpeas, husked-brown rice, among others.
“We believe that these steps will definitely bring down prices of food items in the country,” the group said.
According to TMV, the measures stem from genuine concerns and interests in the welfare of the masses as well as farmers.
It said the intervention was expected to reduce the inflationary trend in the food sector and open the doors for 250,000 metric tonnes of wheat and 250,000 metric tonnes of maize.
“For us, these proactive interventions depict the government as responsible and responsive to the yearnings of the people.
“We are of the strong opinion that in the final analysis, these measures will address the issue of food insecurity in a very short while.
“We also acknowledge the quest to adopt recommended retail prices for imported food items as it will make them available and affordable.
“We are convinced that this control measure will check the excesses of shylock middlemen that may want to take advantage of the situation,” the group said.(NAN)
