According to him, nearly 10 per cent of CAR’s population now live in Cameroon, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of the Congo.
The spokesman said nearly 190, 000 people had fled CAR since December 2013 when the anti-Balaka militia overran Bangui, the African nation’s capital.
He added that the UNHCR said before December 2013, no fewer than 230, 000 people had fled violence and lawlessness, bringing the total number of refugees from the CAR to some 425, 000.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the UNHCR has said that most of CAR refugees fled to the northern Cameroon and southern Chad.
In the meantime, more than 430, 000 people remain internally displaced inside the CAR.
NAN also reports that in 2014, UNHCR and partners appealed for US$210 million under the Central African Republic Regional Refugee Response Plan.
The plan was funded at 120 million dollars, allowing humanitarian agencies to provide only basic life-saving assistance to the refugees. (NAN)
