Sokoto – The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says no fewer than 1,000 houses have been destroyed by windstorm in various parts of Kebbi and Zamfara states in the last 18 days.
Mr Suleiman Muhammad, the Head of Sokoto Zonal Operations Office of NEMA, said this at a news conference in Sokoto on Wednesday.
Muhammad, who gave an update on the disasters so far recorded since the onset of rainy season, said: “No fewer than 800 houses were destroyed by windstorm in Maiyama Local Government Area, Kebbi State, on April 30.
“Happily, there was no loss of life as a result of the disaster, although there some injuries were recorded.
“The agency had since donated assorted relief materials, ranging from roofing sheets, blankets, foodstuffs and cement, among others, to the victims,’’ he said.
Besides, Muhammad said that over 200 houses were also destroyed in Anka, Maradun and Birnin Magaji Local Government Areas of Zamfara on May 2.
“There were also similar disasters recorded in parts of Tambuwal and Shagari Local Government Areas of Sokoto State on May 14.
“Our technical officers are now assessing the extent of the disasters, with a view to donating relief materials to the victims,’’ he said.
