Oyo and Akwa Ibom States on Friday in Abuja emerged winners of the male and female table tennis doubles respectively at the ongoing National Youth Games (NYG).
The Oyo state pair of Abiola Ademola and Oparemi Malik defeated their Bayelsa counterparts, Abiodun Adekunle and Victor Godstime, 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7 in the male competition.
The pair of Beauty James and Umoh Joy of Akwa Ibom beat their Ogun opponents 8-11, 11-2, 12-10, 12-10 to emerge winners in their category.
Speaking later, Akwa Ibom’s coach Ofonime Edoama told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) he was happy with the outcome of the match, saying his boys adhered to instructions.
“I am happy that my boys won this competition, and this was because they listened to my instructions. I give glory to God for this.
“We worked very hard to get to this stage and we are happy that our hard work has produced success. We hope to participate in the competition if it continues next year,’’ he said.
The coach said the victory was a result of their determination to succeed and please their Director of Sports.
“Our Director of Sports urged every team to come back with a gold medal and I am glad we did,” he said.
