Ibadan – The National Museum of Unity, Ibadan, recorded more than 13,000 visitors in 2014, its Curator, Amos Olorunnipa, said on Monday.
Olorunnipa, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on the sidelines of the 2015 International Museum Day celebration, disclosed that the visitors included local and foreign tourists.
He said the figure was higher than the 12, 000 which the museum recorded in 2013.
“The turn out of school children and students of higher institutions at the museum this year is also encouraging.
“ We hope to record a higher figure in 2015,” he said.
The curator said the 2015 Museum Day celebration was low key because of the economic challenge the country was contending with.
“However, we thank God for being able to celebrate it with others in the world,” he added.
Olorunnipa, however, urged public spirited individuals to partner with the museum in preserving cultural artifacts.

In a goodwill message, the Director-General, National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Mr Yusuf Usman, said the museum was duty bound to impact knowledge on its community and society at large.
Usman said the Day’s theme, “Museums for a Sustainable Society,’’ recognised the role of museums in raising public awareness about the need for a less wasteful and more cooperative society.
He said the commission joined the museum world to appreciate the ingenuity of forefathers by celebrating the Day. (NAN)
