Katsina – No fewer than 100 primary schools in Katsina State are expected to benefit from improved reading ability of their pupils under the Reading and Numeracy Activity (RANA) project of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The project’s Director, Mr Nuraddin Lawal, disclosed this on Monday in Katsina, when he visited the Executive Chairman, Katsina Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Alhaji Lawal Buhari.
He said that the project would cover 60 public schools and 40 Quranic schools in the state.
Lawal stated that the project was aimed at improving reading abilities in Hausa language of pupils from primary one to three.
The director said by the time the pupils finished primary three, “they know how to read and write and can easily be taught in English Language. “
He said that the project had been supporting literacy programmes in many countries across the World.
In his remarks, the SUBEB Chairman, Alhaji Lawal Buhari, said that the board was ready more than ever before to join hands with such agencies to move the education sector forward.
He said that the project would also assist the government to address some of the education challenges at the grassroots level.
