The Ikeja Special Offences Court has deferred proceedings until May 9 to allow the defence ample time to review additional evidence submitted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) concerning the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele. Emefiele faces charges related to alleged fraud amounting to $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion.
In a brief ruling, Justice Rahman Oshodi acknowledged the arguments from both sides and granted the defence’s request for an adjournment, expressing satisfaction with their reasons. Emphasizing the importance of fairness, he scheduled the continuation of the trial for May 9.
Earlier, Emefiele’s counsel, Mr Olalekan Ojo (SAN), informed the court of the prosecution’s submission of additional evidence and requested sufficient time to review it. He stressed the necessity of providing the defence with ample opportunity to prepare, highlighting the principle that justice delayed is justice denied.
Second defence counsel, Mr Adeyinka Kotoye (SAN), echoed Ojo’s sentiments, urging the court to ensure fairness and prevent trial by ambush. He emphasized the need for adequate time to study the new evidence.
In response, EFCC Counsel, led by Mr Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), argued against the defence’s request, stating that the prosecution had diligently provided the evidence in advance. Oyedepo emphasized the importance of expeditious proceedings while refuting claims of unfairness.
The case has drawn public attention, with former Director of Information Technology of the CBN, Mr John Ayoh, alleging on April 29 that he collected $600,000 for contract gratification for Emefiele. Emefiele faces charges including abuse of office, accepting gratifications, and receiving property fraudulently obtained. His co-defendant is also facing charges related to accepting gifts by agents.
