Lagos – A Consultant on Poultry, Mr Olugbega Ogunsetan, on Tuesday said that high cost of inputs and importation of poultry products were causes of non-development of the poultry industry in Nigeria.
Ogunsetan stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos,.

He said that poultry farming was almost becoming impossible as a result of these impediments.
The consultant said that there was more to be done concerning the implementation of the ban on imported poultry products by the Federal Government.
“Farming business is almost impossible now in Nigeria, especially in the poultry sub-sector, because the prices of inputs have sky-rocketed.
“While the influx of imported poultry products is increasingly alarming by the day, we want the government to see the ban implementation through.
“Daily, you will see imported poultry products in droves coming into Lagos and they are making a serious mess of the economy.
“The cost of production locally is high. The influx of imported products too is completely killing the industry, ‘’ Ogunsetan told NAN.
According to Ogunsetan, who is the immediate past Executive Secretary, Lagos State Poultry Association of Nigeria, cost of producing table eggs has also increased.
“I will not be surprised if by tomorrow they are importing table eggs because the cost of producing table eggs locally is over N700 per crate. Meanwhile, the price from the farm is still N650.
“So, it is terrible and we want action-based agriculture policies by the government,’’ Ogunsetan said.
He, however, urged Nigerians to patronise local processors of poultry products at all times, to keep them in business. (NAN)
