Ilorin -The College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin, has been ranked as the third best medical college in Nigeria after the University of Ibadan and Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
This was revealed by the Clinical Director, St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos, Dr. Ebun-Ladipo Bamgboye, on Monday during an interactive session with newsmen in Ilorin.
Bamgboye, who is also a Consultant Neurologists, said that this feat has shown that the college can be on the top of the first 10 medical programmes in Nigeria at no distant time.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the revelation of the medical practitioner has been corroborated by the website: www.students.com.ng, which confirmed that other medical colleges rated are those of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, as the fourth followed by the University of Lagos.
The 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th best medical colleges are listed as the Lagos State University, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, the Delta State University, Abraka, the Niger Delta University and Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, respectively.
The physician also disclosed that there are 31 accredited medical schools and nine accredited dental schools in the country.
According to him, six out of the medical colleges have partial accreditation and two of the dental colleges have partial accreditation.
“Each of the medical schools produces between 50 and 180 doctors and the dental schools 10-40 dentists yearly.
“Altogether the medical schools produce an average of 3,000 doctors and 300 dentists every year,’’ he said.
