Jos – An Upper Area Court sitting in Kasuwan Nama in Jos, on Thursday, ordered a 30-year-old labourer, Musa Sani, to receive 10 lashes for illegal possession of indian hemp and causing public nuisance.
The judge, Malam Yahaya Mohammed, gave the order after the convict pleaded guilty to the two-count charge.
Sani was thereafter set free by the court.
Mohammed said that the judgment would serve as a deterrent to those who would want to indulge in such indecent act.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported at the Laranto Police Station on Jan. 9, by the surveillance team attached to the station.
Gokwat said that the convict was arrested while he was smoking weeds at a criminal hideout when the police team raided the scene.
The prosecutor said the police also found some quantities of Cannabis Sativa on him.
The prosecutor said the offence was contrary to sections 151 and 305 of Plateau State Penal Code.
