PORT HARCOURT – The Director of Sports at the University of Port Harcourt, Dr Ken Anugweje, said on Tuesday that authorities of the university were determined to make the institution a centre of sports excellence.
Anugweje told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ajienka, had done so much to make the university to excel in sports.
He said that due to the priority given to sports, the university had won the Nigerian University Games (NUGA) back-to-back five times, West African University Games, five times back-to-back.
The director said the university’s athletes made up the bulk of athletes who would represent the Nigeria in this year’s World University Games.
“Sports has become a kind of religion in this university.
“The vice-chancellor of the university has said severally that this university is a centre of excellence in sports and it is undisputable.
“NUGA champions five times back to back, West African University Games champions five times back to back. This makes us beat our chest.’’
Anugweje said that 50 per cent of the athletes taking part in the AFN Third All Comers Athletics Meet were students of the university.
