Agency begins campaign on disaster risk reduction in Niger

Minna –   The Niger state Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) says it has began house-to-house campaigns on disaster risk reduction in the state.

A statement by Alhaji Ahmed Inga, Director General of NSEMA on Saturday in Minna said that disasters were natural phenomenon that can only be managed but cannot be completely avoided.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report that the Director General was speaking during the commemoration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “reducing the economic loss of disasters”.

Inga said that disasters occurs in every part of the world, Nigerian inclusive and Niger state is not left out.

“Niger over the years has been experiencing different kinds of disasters ranging from fire outbreaks, road crashes, epidemics and winds storms. Flooding are peculiar because of the hydro electrical power dams domicile in the state.

“The state over the years has recorded loss of lives and property to different form of disasters, billions of naira have been spent in the areas of relief assistance, sensitization and search and rescue operation.

“Disaster management is capital intensive the world over. Today there is a paradigm shift in the approach from disaster management to Disaster Risk Reduction which is less cost effective,” he said.

Inga noted that the house-to-house campaign became necessary to help educate the people to put in place preventive measures for quick response to disasters.

He said that the state government spent huge sums of money on the management of this year’s flood victims across the local government areas of the state.
