Abuja- A Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja on Wednesday granted bail of N9.1 million to a man, Steve Warigon, 40, who is standing trial for alleged cheating.
The judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, also ordered the defendant to produce a surety in like sum who must be residing within the court’s jurisdiction.
Kagarko said the prosecutor, Donatus Abah, must verify the surety’s address as part of the bail conditions.
The judge adjourned the case till Oct. 19 for definite trial.
The defendant of Drive 5, Prince and Princess Estate, Abuja was arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating.
The prosecutor had told the court that one Ja’afaru Jaji of Suncity Estate, Abuja reported the matter on June 13 at the Apo Police Station.
He said the complainant entrusted the sum of N9 million with the defendant sometimes in Nov. 2013.
Abah said that the money was paid to the defendant’s GTB account.
The prosecutor said the defendant promised to refund the money within a given time but absconded at due date.
Abah said that all efforts to reach the defendant were abortive until his recent arrest by the Police.
He said the offences contravene Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.
The defendant had pleaded not guilty to the charges
