Yenagoa – The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa on Tuesday said that it embarked on evacuation of refuse heaps to compliment the efforts of the state government.
The party’s governorship candidate, Chief Timipre Sylva, had on Nov. 3 mobilised women and youths of the party to evacuate refuse in Yenagoa, Bayelsa capital.
The APC hired refuse trucks and other earth-moving equipment for the sanitation exercise.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the APC’s gesture prompted the state government to mobilised its contractors to clear the refuse side-by-side the APC.
The Director, Media and Publicity, Sylva-Igiri Campaign Organisation, Chief Nathan Egba, told NAN that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) misunderstood APC’s intentions.
“We had the intention of cleaning up Bayelsa of heaps of refuse to assist the efforts of the government who are visibly overwhelmed by the volume of refuse.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
“We spent our resources to hire trucks, equipment, but our efforts were sabotaged as supporters of the ruling party attacked our volunteers and vandalised the trucks we hired.
“One of the trucks was burnt down while our volunteers were beaten up by PDP members.
“We did not set out to embarrass the government, we were concerned about the public health implication and wanted to avert a looming epidemic with mounting refuse.
“We understand their frustration, but that doesn’t justify their resorting to violence,” Egba said.
But the Dickson’s Campaign Organisation berated the APC and urged it to look for other means of campaign.
Its Director, Media and Publicity, Mr Jonathan Obuobite, had in a statement accused the APC of attacking PDP faithful and stoning the convoy of its candidate.
The statement stated that the security details attached to Gov. Seriake Dickson brought the clash under control.
It cautioned Bayelsa people and residents against APC’s antics to grab power through the back door by advancing various “dubious’’ means. (NAN)
