Asaba – Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta says athletics trial for the Africa Senior Athletics Championship (ASAC) would begin on July 18, at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.
Okowa, who disclosed this during an inspection visit to the stadium, said the ongoing renovation was at its advanced stage.
He said the main bowl with nine tracks, was ready, while critical areas requiring attention were been addressed.
According to Okowa, work at the stadium has greatly advanced, but I will keep monitoring the project to ensure that it is complete on target.
“I was here on Friday alongside Gov. Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe to inspect the stadium project and a lot of work has been done after that.
“The athletics trial will start on July 18, I will visit the project frequently to encourage the contractors to deliver on time,” he said.
The governor said the State Government would be partnering with the Federal Government on sports, to effectively put the stadium into use after the ASAC championship.
He said government would also use the facility for the grooming of young athletes from primary and secondary schools in the state.
Okowa also inspected ongoing storm water projects at various points in Asaba.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 54 African countries are expected to participate in the championship, billed for between Aug. 1 and Aug. 5, 2018.
