Zaria – No fewer than 100 prison inmates in Bauchi state, have regained their freedom following the intervention of “Brilliant Girls Initiative”, a Non Government Organisation (NGO).
Hajiya Aishatu Abubakar, wife of Bauchi State Governor and founder of the NGO, stated this in an interview with Journalists on Wednesday in Zaria, Kaduna State.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Abubakar spoke on the sideline of an ongoing three-day National Conference organised by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Faculty of Law.
The theme of the conference is: “Promoting Peace, Security and Human Rights: Curbing Unsavoury Relationship between Herdsmen and Farmers in Nigeria.”
She said the NGO was also working towards promoting girl-child education and women empowerment through skill acquisition to bridge the yawning gap of educational development existing among women in the state.
Abubakar, who is an alumnus of ABU Faculty of Law, said facilitating the release of the inmates was to restore freedom to the prisoners and make them better citizens to contribute to the positive development of Bauchi State.
Commenting on herdsmen/farmers clashes in the country, the wife of the governor expressed displeasure over the unsavoury relationship between the groups who hitherto had lived together in peace.
She said that Fulani cattle breeders and farmers had lived harmoniously previously and wondered how the relationship had gone sour.
Abubakar urged all Nigerians to play active roles collectively and individually to end the incessant conflicts which had resulted in loss of lives and property.
She advised students in the country to exhibit high sense of discipline, dedication, commitment and cultivate sound relationship with their lecturers towards becoming better leaders tomorrow.
