Berlin – Oscar-winning British Director Danny Boyle believes that Britain’s exit from the EU will lead to the breakup of the United Kingdom.
According to Boyle, if they can vote again, his compatriots will reject Brexit.
“I think people are coming to realise what a huge step it is.
I think that if you took the vote again now it would be to remain,’’ the director said.
Boyle was speaking at the Berlin Film Festival, which screened the sequel to one of his other hit movies, Trainspotting, 20 years after the original film first appeared.
He believed that Britain’s political leadership failed the country leading up to last June’s referendum to leave the EU.
According to him, the nation’s leaders did not explain why Europe is such a valuable thing.
“Scotland, which has its own leadership and has a very impressive leadership, voted to remain,’’ Boyle said.
He predicted that Scotland would leave the UK and would stay in Europe.
“Scotland will choose Europe instead of the UK so the people who voted for (Brexit) are triggering the breakup of the UK. There is no doubt in mind that it will happen,’’ he said.
In “T2 Trainspotting”, Boyle has reassembled the cast of his 1996 “Trainspotting.”
But 20 years on instead of youth, “T2 Trainspotting” tells the story of the male characters as they face up to growing older and the disappointments of life. “T2 Trainspotting”, which stars Ewan McGregor and Robert Carlyle, is screen out of competition in Berlin, meaning it is not in line for the festival’s coveted prizes.
