British International Development Minister arrives Lagos

Lagos –  The visiting United Kingdom’s Minister for International Development, Mr Nick Hurd, on Tuesday arrived in Lagos, Nigeria on his first official visit to the country.
The British High Commission in Nigeria, in a statement issued by its Head of Communication, Mr Edward Dunn, said that the visit would focus on Britain’s response to the humanitarian situation in North Eastern Nigeria.
The statement said that the visit would further enhance the UK’s support for the use of solar energy in Nigeria.
According to it, the Minister will also participate in a range of discussions with the Nigerian Government, to emphasise the importance of good governance and accountability in ensuring poverty reduction.
“The UK Minister for International Development, Nick Hurd, has arrived in Nigeria on his first trip to the country.
“During his stay, Minister Hurd will focus on Britain’s assistance to the humanitarian situation in the northeast, as well the UK’s support for increasing the use of solar energy in Nigeria.
“His visit will also focus on the humanitarian situation in the northeast and will explore what can be done to further protect civilians affected by conflict with Boko Haram
“Minister Hurd will also participate in a range of discussions with the Nigerian Government, to emphasise the importance of good governance and accountability in ensuring poverty reduction,’’ the statement said.
It added that the Minister would also be meeting with the `Bring Back Our Girls’ Campaign Group at the end of their “Global Week of Action”.
The minister is also expected to meet with industry representatives and business leaders to discuss the potential for large-scale business development and innovative work in waste recycling and management.
He is also to inspect UK-supported projects in the development of Nigeria’s rapidly growing solar energy market.
“This forms part of the UK’s Energy Africa campaign, which aims to light up the African continent quickly, without resorting to technology with high-emissions,’’ it added.(NAN)
