Some times in June 2017, when President Buhari was recuperating in London, the idea of filling the vacant post of the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, NIA, came up.
Propping up prominently was the name of an officer of Igbo extraction who had risen through the ranks to reach the post of Director. In fact, he was next, organogramically, to the outgone DG.
Well-meaning members of government including the Vice-president had impressed upon the President to confirm him as the substantive DG having been acting. According to them, it would take the wind off the sail of Biafra agitators and further showed the President as being father to all.
Buhari was said to be excited and asked for security check on the guy and he was given a clean bill of health. Some insiders sounded the guy out and told him to be expectant that he would be confirmed as soon as the president returned.
Baba did return but named someone else as DG of NIA
You see, one of the greatest scams of the 2015 electioneering was that those who sold Buhari (I must admit!) successfully created the impression that the contest between him and Jonathan then was a contest between GOOD and EVIL; between NOBILITY and VILLAINY; between PATRIOTISM and SUBVERSION.
Yet, it was none of these.
We must thank God though for this nation: NO ONE CAN USE CORRUPTION AS THE ONLY PRECONDITION FOR LEADERSHIP.
I read that the president only appoints those he could trust. If a president can only trust those from his tribe alone, then there is a problem.
My consolation? Even if they rig the 2019 election for him, he won’t do beyond 2023. That is if God spares him till then.
The fear was that they could not appoint someone they could not “trust” to be in charge of the DSS for the 2019 elections. And since bringing back Daura won’t fly, they had to bring someone from retirement when there were existing and capable career officers!
This is parochialism like never before!
