The media office representing former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has called for President Bola Tinubu’s intervention to rein in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
This plea comes in the wake of an attempt by EFCC officials to arrest Alhaji Yahaya Bello at his Wuse Zone 4 Residence, despite a standing court injunction issued on February 9, 2024.
The injunction, granted by the High Court of Justice, Lokoja Division, prohibits the EFCC from harassing, arresting, detaining, or prosecuting Bello pending the outcome of a fundamental rights enforcement action. Despite being served with the injunction on February 12, 2024, the EFCC proceeded to file an appeal and a motion for stay of execution, with a hearing scheduled for April 22, 2024.
Additionally, a judgment in the substantive case between Bello and the EFCC was set to be delivered at noon on the same day in Lokoja. The media office expressed dismay at the EFCC’s actions, labeling them as a blatant disregard for the rule of law and a potential threat to Nigeria’s legal integrity.
They highlighted the perceived politicization of the EFCC and called on President Tinubu to intervene to uphold legal order and prevent further erosion of public trust in law enforcement agencies.
