The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria Stakeholders Summit, which concluded on May 3rd, has left an indelible mark on participants, promising lasting effects well into the future. The event, characterized by bold declarations and candid discussions, provided a platform for stakeholders to freely express their thoughts and ideas.
Held over two days at the Musa Yar’Adua International Centre in Abuja, the summit centered around the theme of “Partnership, Collaboration, and Teamwork,” and was generously sponsored by Lotus Bank. The summit was inaugurated by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima (GCON), with esteemed guests including His Eminence, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar (CFR), Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of NSCIA, as well as various government ministers, ambassadors, and dignitaries.
During the summit, the Chairman/CEO of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) announced the highly anticipated inaugural flight date for Hajj 2024, scheduled for May 15th in Kebbi State. Additionally, he revealed plans for two extra flights departing from other airports on the same day, with a total of 10 airports approved by NCAA for this year’s Hajj airlift. Furthermore, May 15th was designated as the deadline for all visa issuances.
Discussions during the sessions revolved around various Hajj-related matters, with particular attention drawn to the performance of the Hajj Saving Scheme (HSS). Many stakeholders expressed dissatisfaction with the scheme, attributing shortcomings to the perceived inefficiency of Jaiz Bank, the principal beneficiary. Concerns were raised regarding the lack of public sensitization and advertising efforts by the bank, prompting calls for the licensing of additional Islamic banks to end Jaiz Bank’s monopoly and foster healthy competition.
One notable revelation emerged during the summit regarding the appointment of NAHCON’s Chairman/CEO, Jalal Ahmed Arabi. Despite initial hesitations, Arabi’s acceptance of the role was portrayed as a testament to his principles, integrity, and dedication to serving Allah. His decision to heed the call to lead NAHCON, despite personal reservations, reflects his commitment to effecting positive change within the Commission and the broader Hajj industry.
Arabi’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of leadership grounded in principles and sacrifice. As he embarks on his tenure, Arabi’s unwavering dedication and commitment to excellence are poised to reshape the Hajj landscape in Nigeria, offering hope for a brighter future for all stakeholders involved. The true impact of his leadership will be witnessed during the upcoming Hajj season, with expectations high for a successful and transformative experience, by the will of Allah.
