Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general election, has called on Nigerians and government authorities to focus their investments on areas that will foster the development of children.
In his Children’s Day message, Obi emphasized the importance of ensuring the proper growth and development of children, who represent the future of society.
“It is unacceptable that four out of every ten Nigerian children are involved in child labor,” Obi stated. Writing on his X handle on Monday, the former Governor of Anambra State expressed his concerns and hopes for the Nigerian child.
“On this Children’s Day, I celebrate with all Nigerian children. Our commitment to building a New Nigeria is driven by our desire to secure a better future for them,” Obi wrote. “This day reminds us to focus on our children, the future leaders of our society, and underscores the need to invest in their growth, support, and dreams.”
Obi highlighted the necessity for every Nigerian child to have access to quality education, healthcare, and a safe environment. He stressed that investing in these key areas is crucial for the well-being of children and the future of society.
He also lamented the ongoing issue of child labor in Nigeria, citing a National Bureau of Statistics report indicating that 39.2 percent of children are engaged in child labor, with 22.9 percent involved in hazardous work.
“These figures highlight a dire situation where four out of every ten children in Nigeria are trapped in child labor, jeopardizing their future and that of society,” Obi noted. “To address this, we must focus on reducing poverty and upholding the rights of every Nigerian child.”
Obi commended parents, guardians, teachers, and benefactors for their efforts in raising responsible citizens and urged them to continue their dedication.
To the children, he offered words of encouragement: “Take your moral and educational formation seriously. We remain committed to building a safe, secure, and productive nation where you can fully explore your potential. The New Nigeria we envision is possible.”
