Enugu – The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) on Monday in Enugu handed over empowerment materials to the State Emergency Management Agency for IDPs in the state.
The empowerment items include agricultural equipment, hair dressing and sewing equipment such as wheel barrows, hoes, rakes, hair dryers, sewing machines, grinding machines and rain boots.
The Federal Commissioner of the NCFRMI, Hajia Sadiya Farouq, said that the gesture was its contribution toward the rehabilitation, reintegration and re-admission of the victims to their homes.
Farouq, represented by the Director, Human Resource Management, Mr Emma Nkwopara, said that the commission was concerned with finding durable solutions to plight of disaster victims.
She said that it had become imperative for government to assist displaced persons in acquiring lasting skills to leading a rewarding life.
“The commission is now moving away from giving relief materials to donating durable items to victims and enable them acquire life skills.
“We believe that by identifying with the victims today with these token, the commission may have succeeded in inspiring and embolden their aspirations.
“We will, therefore, continue to work very hard to ensure that the lives of our vulnerable groups are improved, rehabilitated and fully restored,” she said.
Farouq said that the commission in continuation with its 2018 interventions had previously distributed same materials in Abuja, Nasarawa, Edo, Benue, Bauchi and Taraba states.
Responding, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Mrs Nkechi Eneh, said that the materials would assist the beneficiaries in the 2018 farming season and in other endeavours.
Eneh said that the commission had previously assisted internally displaced persons arising from the suspected herdsmen attack in Nimbo, Uzo Uwani Local Government Area of the state.
She said that some of the victims and beneficiaries of the items had their farms razed by fire in Nsukka and other areas.
Eneh assured that the agency would ensure that the materials would be handed over directly to the victims.
Also, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties, Mr Uwakwe Azikiwe, said that the gesture would help reintegrate the victims to their respective communities.
“From the gesture of the commission, it shows that the mandate of the commission is being effectively achieved,” he said. (NAN)
