Keffi – Some victims of ethnic and farmers/herdsmen clashes in Nasarawa State have lauded Gov. Tanko Al-Makura for distributing relief materials worth N300 million to 50 affected communities across the state.
Some of residents of affected Assakio community made the commendation while fielding questions from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on their plight on Thursday.
NAN recalls that Al-Makura on June 13, flagged off the distribution of the relief materials to over 50 communities affected by ethnic groups and farmers/herdsmen crises.
The relief materials distributed included bags of cement, zinc, rice and nail as well as cartoons of Maggi cubes, among others.
However, they called for the sustenance of the intervention and support to cushion their hardships.
They also urged the state government to intensify efforts in beefing up security in rural areas to protect lives and property across the state.
Mr Hassan Agbona said: “I am a resident of Assakio community in Lafia Local Government Area of the state and one of the victim in which our property has been destroyed due to farmers/herdsmen and tribal crises.
“Even though during the crisis, many lives have been lost and I thank God that for sparing my life.
“I want to thank Gov. Al-Makura for the distribution of the relief materials as it would go long way in reducing our suffering because it is not easy for one to recover from violence on time.
“I also want to use this medium to call on the people of Nasarawa state to continue to live in peace, be our brother’s keepers irrespective of our ethnic, religious and political affiliation,” he said.
Another resident, Mr John Agla, urged the people of the state to embrace peace no matter the level of provocation, adding “what peace cannot give, violence will not give’’.
“You see, crisis or violence can only do more harm than good to any community or nation that is why I always advise people to embrace peace and unity and to report their grievances to the appropriate authority for necessary action than engaging in violence,” he said.
Mrs Hauwa Opala, another resident of Assakio, decried the recurrent communal and farmers/herdsmen crises in the state, noting that it is affecting various communities and the socio economic development of the state adversely.
“We lost almost everything during the previous crisis in our area as even many lives, people we know and even our relatives died, but today we that are alive are trusting God that we are living peacefully with each other.
“On the distribution of the relief materials by Gov. Al-Makura, to be sincere, I want to commend his efforts because no matter how big or little the materials are, it would go a long way in improving our standard of living,” she said.
She also urged the people to always be law abiding, respect constituted authorities and live in peace in order to achieve speedy development in the state.
Similarly, some residents of Tudun Adabu and Shabu communities also lauded Al-Makura for providing the succour and called for its sustenance.
