YENAGOA (Sundiata Post) – Community folks travelling on the Yenigue-Okaki road on Tuesday were left stranded as the road was barricaded at the junction of the Igbogene-AIT-Bayelsa Palm road awaiting commissioning.
The section of the road was scheduled to be commissioned on Tuesday by the governor of Niger State, Muhammed Umar Bago by 3.00pm, but the commissioning was delayed by over two hours.
Okaki is in neighbouring Rivers State and the only access to the community is through the Yenigue-Okaki road.
Traders with goods from the market at Mbiama, school children and ordinary folks going about their legitimate activities were seen sweating under the sweltering heat.
There was no explanation for the delay as first class traditional rulers and other dignitaries were among hundreds of Bayelsans who had turned out to witness the commissioning of the road.
Two sections of the Igbogene-AIT-Bayelsa Palm road had earlier been commissioned, one by former governor, Henry Seriake Dickson in the twilight days of his second term in office.
Incumbent Governor Diri commissioned another section last year while marking the third year anniversary of his Prosperity Government.
Tuesday’s scheduled commissioning was for the last two sections of the road.
The road earlier designed as a dual carriageway, but only one carriageway has been built by the state government citing paucity of funds.
The government has assured that the remaining carriageway would be built later on the completion of the first carriageway.
