Mararaba (Nasarawa State) – A Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court, Aso Pada, on Wednesday ordered the remand of a 30-year-old businesswoman, Fatima Umaru in Keffi Prison over alleged cheating.
The accused, who resides at Kabayi Mararaba, is standing trial for criminal breach of trust and cheating.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Adaji, objected to the bail application and prayed for a short adjournment to enable him brings his witnesses.
The Judge, Mr Albert Maga, ordered for the remand of Umaru after she pleaded not guilty of collecting a loan and refusing to pay back.
Maga after listening to the accused plea ordered her remand in prison and adjourned the case till Jan. 29, for ruling.
“The case of cheating people of their money is rampant in this area, this is to serve as a deterrent to future offenders,” he said.
Earlier, the prosecutor told the court that the case was reported at the ‘A’ Police Station on Jan. 17, by one Mr Odoba Samuel of Fortis Micro Finance Bank PLC, Mararaba.

“On Sept. 9, 2015, the accused collected a loan of N50,000 from the bank and promised to pay back within the period of sixteen weeks, but only paid N16,000.
“The accused only paid N16,000 for four weeks and absconded to an unknown destination, before she was seen and arrested on Jan. 17,’’ he said.
He said that the offences contravened sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.
If found guilty, the accused is liable to five years jail term with an option of fine or both.(NAN)
