Ile-Ife (Osun) – An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun, on Tuesday, remanded a 42-year-old man, Chinedu Iroegbu, over alleged fraudulent collection of 20 bags of rice.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Abdullahi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Jan. 2, at Km. 1, Oniyanrin Road, Oke-Ogbo, Ile-Ife.
Abdullahi said that the defendant fraudulently collected 20 bags of rice, valued at N346,000 from one Adejumo Adebiyi, with the pretence to pay back in two weeks’ time but failed to do so.
He added that the defendant fraudulently converted the 20 bags of rice that belonged to Adebiyi to his own.
According to him, the offences contravene Sections 421 and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of fraud and collection preferred against him.
The Defence Counsel, Mr Alfred Omotayo, prayed the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal term, saying that he would not jump bail, but would provide reliable sureties.
The Magistrate, Mrs Habibat Basiru, however, refused to grant the defendant bail, but ordered for his remand in the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Ile-Ife.
Basiru, thereafter, adjourned the case till Feb. 27, for ruling on bail.
