Abuja – Indigenous scientists and researchers have been urged to support Federal Government’s effort aimed at ensuring sustainable development through science and technology.
Mrs Nnenna Okoronkwo, the Director, Chemical Technology Department, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.
Okoronkwo said that the contribution of home-grown stakeholders through the adaptation of technology and development of an efficient science and technology “will improve the level of achievement of the present administration’’.
Okoronkwo told NAN that human and national sustainable development could largely determine by the level of indigenous and endogenous scientific and technological research and the communication of research results.
She added that any society without indigenous and endogenous science and technology research capacity would continue to remain underdeveloped.
“Human development history has shown that the sustainable development and self-sustaining progress of any country has generally followed development and applications of technology controlled by and responsive to the needs of the country.
“Sustainable development of any country has generally followed the development and applications of science and technology with the aim of accelerating the pace of economic development.
“To examine the role science and technology has been playing in promoting national development in Nigeria, a wide variety of different policies have been pursued in an effort to foster technological development.
“We have not largely succeeded as a nation to make effective use of technology in promoting national development, but the nation is advancing gradually through the application of Science, Technology and Innovation to attain greatness,“ she said.
The director said that many developed countries achieved their level of development through the adaptation of technology and development of an efficient science and technology capacity.
According to her, others are the knowledge acquired and brought to bear on policy making, programme formulation, project implementation, monitoring and impact assessment.
“ Scientific research in all its forms is the cornerstone of a nation’s social and economic development,“ she said. (NAN)
