LAGOS – Lagos Islanders Basketball Club on Monday defeated Oluyole Warriors of Ibadan 63-43 to earn their first win from their second match at the ongoing DStv Men’s Basketball Play-offs.

Eight clubs are currently eyeing the 2013/2014 national champions title at the play-offs, after qualifying from the 16-team regular season.

The play-offs began on Sunday at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Lagos.

After the game, the Islanders coach, Lateef Erinfolami, told NAN that his team had improved in their second match, having lost 42-45 to Gombe Bulls in their first game.

“We lost our first game to a team more physical in their approach.

“I cautioned my players against expecting the referee to make calls for them, and to be more physical and expect such from opposite teams,” Erinfolami said.

The Islanders would need a victory over Mark Mentors of Abuja in their third game and final Group B match to ensure qualification to the semi-finals stage.

On his part, the Oluyole Warriors coach, Bayo Aderinboye, attributed his team’s loss to the individualistic approach of his players to the match.

“My boys did not play as a team. They were too individualistic in their approach.

“I cautioned them in our first match, when we fell 61-82 to Mark Mentors of Abuja, but unfortunately they did not take to corrections.

“We will go back to the drawing board and try to make amends as we play our last group match against Gombe Bulls,” Aderinboye said.

The competition’s defending champions, Kano Pillars, had defeated their Union Bank opponents 88-71 in a classic match played on Sunday.
