Abakaliki – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi Council, on Thursday elected a 5-man Executive Council to pilot the affairs of the union in the next three years.
The election, which took place at the secretariat of the union, returned Mrs Veronica Oshim, the immediate past chairperson of the union, to pilot the affairs of the union for another three years.
Other elected officials are; Mr Sam Nweke, Vice Chairman, Tony Nwizi, Secretary, Ben Nworie, Financial Secretary and Mrs Sylvia Igiri as Treasurer.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that there was a large turn-out of members from various NUJ chapel for the election.
NAN reports that the election was conducted under credible, free and fair atmosphere.
Speaking on behalf of the new executives, the chairperson pledged to enhance the welfare of journalists in the state, and appealed for support and cooperation of every member.
She commended members for the peaceful conduct of the election, saying she would be open to suggestions and contributions that would uplift the standard of media practice in state.
“In this contest, I wish to say that there is no victor and no vanquished. The victory is for everyone and I wish to say that my door will be opened to every member to contribute toward the upliftment of the union.

“I commend everybody for ensuring peaceful conduct of the poll; the peace in the council will be sustained,” Oshim said.
Earlier, the Secretary, Zone C, South-East, Mr Chris Iziguzo, in a speech before the dissolution of the past executive, commended the peace and unity that pervaded in the council under the outgoing executive.
He charged journalists to maintain good conduct in the election of the new executives, adding that the exercise would be free, fair and credible.
“We are here to observe the election of new executive members that will pilot the activities of the NUJ Ebonyi State Council for the next three years as required by our constitution.
“I enjoin every journalist here to exhibit high sense of professional conduct as we go into the elections,” Iziguzo said. (NAN)
