LAGOS – Mr Wole Ajose, Deputy Provost, Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education (AOCOED), Lagos, has said that rewarding academic excellence remained one of the ways to enhance the nation’s standard of education.
Ajose made the assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of the Graduation and Prize Giving ceremony of the AOCOED Staff School, Ijaniki, Lagos on Wednesday.
He said the significance of prize giving was to encourage hard work so as to enhance qualitative education and create a culture of industry in academics.
The don also said that contrary to other opinions, rewarding of excellence motivated both the pupils and parents.
According to him, it will encourage the children to work hard and not to cut corners during examinations, especially nowadays of examination malpractice.
“If pupils are constantly recognised for excellent performance in academics, it will encourage healthy competition among them.
“This will boost the education sector, thereby, raising the standard of education.

“The advanced countries that we admire reward excellence to bringing the best out of every pupil.
“These are ways to enhance qualitative education as their input are essential in the sector because a nation will be judged by the performance of its pupils and students in any examination,” he said.
Also speaking to NAN, the Director, Planning Department, Lagos State University, Chief Kazeem Onile-Nla, noted that prize giving motivated children.
Onile-Nla said that reward contributed to the efforts to check and minimise examination malpractice among the youth.
“Children will wake up to realise our value system of hard work which we have lost because laziness is not an attribute of an average African man.
“So, if the children are well groomed, the reading culture will be imbibed and the desire for quality education will be achieved,” he said.
According to him, one does not achieve academic success without reading, so, such occasions will make children to shun all forms of distraction and inculcate the reading culture.
Meanwhile, the Chairman, Otto-Awori Local Council Development Area, Mr Kayode Robert, encouraged the graduating pupils to commit more efforts to their education.
The chairman, who also received an award for his contributions to the development of the school, urged the children to take advantage of the opportunity to excel in their academics.
“I had it rough in my days trying to make ends meet and that is why I have vowed to contribute to the education sector.
“I am encouraging the pupils to take the bull by the horn and make use of the facilities available, read and you will surely be rewarded,” he said. (NAN)
