Abuja – Mrs Sarah Abagai, the Head of Department, Dietetics, National Hospital Abuja, has advised Nigerians to consume nutrient-rich diets
in order to lower the risk of heart diseases.
Abagai gave the advice in an Interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.
According to her, eating right does not have to be complicated.
She explained that it was vital for Nigerians to have a shift from high fat foods to healthier foods and beverage choices.
The head of department said foods low in saturated fats could help to reduce the risk of heart disease, adding that fats consumed should be
monounsaturated oils.
She said that the aim of reducing fat intake was to normalise body weight, blood glucose level, control blood lipid level and lower the risk of heart diseases.
“Eating right doesn’t have to be complicated and it is important to count calories consumed daily.
“Also, people should think of nutrient-rich foods rather than good or bad foods and most food choices should contain vitamins, minerals, fibre and other nutrients.
“Making smart food choices can help one to stay healthy, manage his or her weight and be physically active.”
She then stressed the need to eat variety of foods from all the food groups, thereby consuming vital nutrients needed by the body.
Abagai also emphasised the need to consume fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat milk, lean meat (beef without fat), poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts for healthy living.
She also advised people to always check the nutrition facts panel on food labels for information that would guide them in purchasing healthy foods. (NAN)
