ABUJA – An Environmentalist, Mrs Nike Aluko, on Friday urged Nigerians to cooperate with the Federal Government towards promoting environmental sustainability and enhance national development.
She gave the advice in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
She stressed the need for government to hasten the completion of various programmes in tackling pollution, erosion and deforestation.
According to her, many countries, including Nigeria, may lose economically to environmental destructions if substantial resources are not committed to mitigate the impacts.
“The Federal Government is partnering with some states on environment issues but more can be done with the assistance of individuals, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and other international bodies.
“They can assist to address environmental degradation and ensure environmental sustainability in the country,” she said.
Aluko also advised the citizens to handle environmental factors that could affect their well-being seriously, adding that good hygiene could enhance healthy living.
“Environmental health risks are factors outside the human body that can affect a person’s well-being.
“For example, the quality of air, food and water supply and their exposure to hazardous materials,” Aluko told NAN.
She noted that preventing or reducing the risk of illness, injury or disease in the community was important for environmental health. (NAN)
