Abuja – Supreme Court Football Club of Abuja on Friday qualified for the final of the 2016 Federation Cup in the FCT after beating city rivals FRSC FC 3-0 on penalty kicks.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match played at the Area 3 football pitch went into penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw at regulation time.
The match had started with both teams being cautious, with scoring opportunities not translated into goals.
Ibukun Ojo drew the first blood by scoring for FRSC 27 minutes into the first half, with Isaac Peter equalising seven minutes later for Supreme Court.
In the penalty shootout after full time, Isaac Peter, Odegbile Olusegun and Mohammed Mohammed scored for Supreme Court FC.
Speaking after the match, Akinade Onigbinde, the coach of FRSC FC, said their attack did not click in order for them to steal the day.
“Actually, our attack did not click and we created a lot of opportunities but unfortunately they did not translate into goals.
“But we thank God, the game progressed to penalty kicks. We all know penalty shootout is anybody’s game, because nobody is perfect in that.
“Now, we will go back and prepare for the third-place match,’’ Onigbinde said.
On his part, Osuji Joachim, the coach of Supreme Court FC, told NAN it had been the team’s wish to play in the final of the Federation Cup competition in the FCT.
“It has been our wish to play in the final of this event and since the emergence of Supreme Court FC, this is the first time we are reaching the finals.
“So, we prayed for this and worked for it. We thank God that he made it possible for our dream to come true this year.
“By God’s grace, we will be winning the competition for Supreme Court,’’ the Head Coach said.
NAN reports that the second semi-final match in the competition will be between Super Lions FC and FC Abuja on Saturday.
The final match is scheduled for Sunday at the same venue.(NAN)
