The Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, observed a minute silence in honour of Chukwuma Onuekwusi, Channels Television State House Correspondent, who died on Tuesday.
The minute silence was observed before the commencement of FEC meeting.
Osinbajo described Onuekwusi as a member of the State House family, adding that he was articulate, patriotic and committed journalist whose death is very sad.
The Acting president said before a minute silence was observed, “Honourable ministers and members of the Federal Executive Council, yesterday we got a very sad news of the passing on of one of the members of State House family, he is Chukwuma Onuekwusi, of the Channels Television, who passed on after a brief illnesses yesterday.
“I want us in recognition of the fact that we remember a very good, a very articulate and also a very patriotic and committed journalist, I want us in honour of this fine gentleman rise and observe a minute silence.”
Osinbajo then prayed for God to “comfort of his family and all of those he left behind. Amen”.
Osinbajo had through his spokesperson, consoled with Onuekwusi’s family, as well as the Channels TV family on his passing.
He also commiserated with the State House Press Corps over the passage of their professional colleague, who he said combined high professionalism, wit, dedication and patriotism in his diligent reportage of activities in the Presidential Villa.
Onuekwusi died at the age of 55 after a brief illness. He had worked with Channels Television for 19 years and was its State House correspondent until his death.
At the end of the meeting which lasted about four hours, Osinbajo accompanied by the National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. Babagana Mougunu (retd), signed the condolence register in Onuekwusi’s honour.
He wrote, “A gentleman, an erudite journalist and a true patriot is gone, we pray that the Lord will comfort his family. Amen.”
Mougunu wrote, “Very sad news! A great journalist gone too soon. Goodbye Nwannem Nwoke my brother.”
