LAGOS – The Aquatic Federation of Nigeria on Friday called on corporate bodies to take advantage of the standard swimming facilities at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos and sponsor competitions. Babatunde Fatai-Williams, the President of the association told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that sponsoring competitions would ensure regular use of the facilities to avoid decay. “The facilities are already on ground; they are of international standard and have electronic timing system. So, we have to put them to regular use as a way of maintaining them. “The Lagos State Government has upgraded the facilities; we are calling on corporate and public-spirited Nigerians and those living abroad to sponsor competitions at the stadium,’’ he said. According to him, regular holding of competitions at the stadium would go a long way in developing new talents and the existing swimmers. “We have swimmers at the junior and senior categories, as well as in different events; their skills can be highlighted only when they participate in competitions,’’ he explained. He expressed the need to monitor the performance of swimmers who participated in the 2014 Ibile Games, especially in the junior category so that they can excel in their chosen career. Fatai-Williams appealed to parents and guardians to encourage their children and wards to either take part in swimming or watch swimmers competitions. According to him, the pool has convenient space for spectators. (NAN)
