Brussels Fingerprints of Salah Abdeslam, 26, a suspect in the Paris terrorist attacks, who has been on the run since 2015, have been found in an apartment in Belgium.
The apartment was raided by police, state prosecutors said on Friday.
The suspect is believed to have joined his brother and other extremists in targeting the Stade de France stadium, the Bataclan music hall, restaurants and bars during the November attacks in the French capital, which left 130 people dead and hundreds injured.
His fingerprints were found in an apartment in the southern Brussels neighbourhood of Forest where gunmen had opened fire on police during an attempted search on Tuesday, prosecutors said in a statement.
The Frenchman had previously lived in the Belgian capital Brussels.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
There had been media reports that he may have escaped to Syria after the attacks.
The search was carried out in connection with the investigation into the Paris attacks, but had reportedly not targeted Abdeslam.
Four police officers were injured in the incident.
A 35-year-old Algerian armed with a Kalashnikov rifle was later killed, but two suspects managed to escape.
It is “more than likely” that Abdeslam was one of those who fled, the broadcaster RTBF reported, without naming a source.
